There are bad riders. There are good riders. And then there are those that just leave you gasping for breath whenever you see them race.
It's been an open secret for quite some time that the Dodge racing team have unearthed a gem of a rider in Ian Defley. Powerful on the mountains, he seems to have added that extra spurts on the road in recent months too. A callup to the Australian national team hasn't exactly hurt either. The Green and Gold is not worn easily.
Those who saw Ian Defley blow away the competition once again at the recent Ainet - Bruggen classic will no doubt agree that the plaudits are more than deserving. It seems that when Defley is injury free and well rested, nothing short of a tank can stop him in his tracks.
The man himself seems to be enjoying his cycling. Trying his best to ignore the "Devastating D" placards that seem to go up amongst the crowds whenever he races nowadays, Defley seems happy to acknowledge the efforts of his teammates.
"It's not just one man out there, you know? Six men, six men and don't we work hard for it."
With that, he flashes a trademark grin and is gone as he is swallowed up by yet another news crew.
He'll be back as always, with his Dodge team. Not much is expected of them at the inaugral Volta ao Porto tour, but as the young man has shown all his career, to dismiss him is to do so at your own peril.
